Who is Huawei

Huawei is best known worldwide for smartphones and telecoms equipment. However, its energy business sits in a separate unit, Huawei Digital Power Technologies Co., Ltd. Huawei set this subsidiary up in June 2021, with registered capital of about RMB 3 billion. It develops solar inverters, battery storage and EV charging under one roof.

The solar side trades under the FusionSolar brand. Huawei launched FusionSolar 1.0 in 2014 and followed it with FusionSolar 2.0 the next year. By 2020, Huawei was bringing its first LUNA2000 home batteries to the European market, pairing them with SUN2000 inverters it already sold to installers. In short, the battery business grew out of an inverter business that was already well established.

That inverter heritage matters. Huawei states it has ranked first worldwide in solar inverter shipments, citing analyst firm IHS Markit. As a result, LUNA2000 buyers are adopting a battery built by the same company that supplies the hybrid inverter it plugs into, rather than a third-party pairing.

Huawei’s footprint is not identical everywhere, though. In some markets, such as Australia, Huawei has stopped selling batteries directly, so existing owners now rely on local installer support. Elsewhere, including much of Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia, Huawei continues to sell LUNA2000 through its installer network.

The Huawei LUNA2000 product range

Huawei sells LUNA2000 as a modular, stackable battery system rather than a single fixed-size box. Installers choose how many battery modules to fit, then add a power module that handles conversion and communication with the inverter. Two generations are currently available.

The S0 generation

The original LUNA2000-S0 series uses 5 kWh battery modules (LUNA2000-5-E0). Installers can stack one to three modules behind a single power module, giving usable capacity of 5, 10 or 15 kWh, sold as LUNA2000-5-S0, -10-S0 and -15-S0. Each module uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells.

Huawei’s own datasheet rates the S0 modules for more than 5,000 cycles while retaining at least 80% of original capacity after 10 years, backed by a 10-year warranty. The system carries an IP66 rating, so it tolerates outdoor installation, and it operates between about -20°C and 55°C.

The S1 “Module+” generation

Huawei followed with a denser S1 series, unveiled for residential use in 2024. It replaces the 5 kWh module with a 6.9 kWh LUNA2000-7-E1 module, which Huawei says lifts usable energy by over 40% in roughly the same footprint. As with S0, installers stack one to three modules, giving 6.9 to 20.7 kWh per group.

The real jump happens at the inverter. A single SUN2000-MB0 hybrid inverter can run up to four of these battery groups in parallel, for about 82.8 kWh of total storage. That is enough for a large home, a small business, or several properties sharing one connection.

Sold variously as LUNA2000-7-S1, -14-S1 and -21-S1 depending on the market, the range also appears as a wider 5 to 21 kWh line-up in some regions. S1 modules keep the same LFP chemistry, IP66 rating and -20°C to 55°C operating range as S0. Huawei’s warranty covers them for 10 years or a lifetime throughput of about 16,450 kWh per module, whichever comes first, with at least 60% of original capacity guaranteed at the end of that term.

Pairing with SUN2000 hybrid inverters

LUNA2000 only works with Huawei’s own SUN2000 hybrid inverters, so the battery choice and the inverter choice are not independent decisions. Smaller single-phase homes typically use the SUN2000-L1 series, rated from about 2 to 6 kW. Three-phase homes commonly pair with the SUN2000-M1 series, roughly 3 to 10 kW, or the larger MB0 series up to 25 kW for bigger systems.

Only the MB0 series currently supports the four-group parallel stacking that unlocks the S1 range’s full 82.8 kWh ceiling. Therefore, anyone planning a large battery bank should check inverter compatibility with an installer before settling on a specific LUNA2000 configuration.

Key technology behind Huawei LUNA2000

Every LUNA2000 module uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. This chemistry runs cooler and resists thermal runaway better than older nickel-based lithium-ion types. As a result, Huawei can rate the modules for outdoor, IP66-rated installation without extra weatherproof housing.

The system splits hardware into two parts: a power module, and one to three battery modules. The power module handles DC conversion, communication with the inverter and safety monitoring. Meanwhile, each battery module carries its own management electronics, so a fault in one module does not necessarily take the whole stack offline.

Monitoring runs through Huawei’s FusionSolar app, available for iOS and Android. Homeowners can track generation, battery state of charge and consumption from their phone. In addition, installers get a separate FusionSolar management portal for remote diagnostics and firmware updates across a fleet of sites, which matters for warranty claims and troubleshooting.

For backup power during an outage, Huawei offers an optional Backup Box that switches the home to battery power automatically. However, independent reviewers have flagged that this box carries only a 2-year warranty, far shorter than the 10-year cover on the battery itself. That gap is worth raising with an installer before relying on LUNA2000 for outage backup.

Strengths and limitations

Huawei brings genuine inverter-manufacturing scale to its battery line. That scale shows up in both the strengths and the trade-offs below.

Pros

  • Backed by one of the world's largest solar inverter manufacturers
  • LFP chemistry gives a long cycle life and a strong safety record
  • Modular design lets installers size the battery to the home
  • S1 modules pack more usable energy into roughly the same footprint as S0
  • IP66 rating allows straightforward outdoor installation
  • 10-year warranty matches the industry standard for home batteries

Cons

  • Works only with Huawei's own SUN2000 inverters, so it locks installers into one ecosystem
  • The optional Backup Box carries just a 2-year warranty
  • Huawei no longer sells batteries directly in some markets, including Australia
  • Full 82.8 kWh stacking needs the larger MB0 inverter, not the entry-level models
  • Installation is installer-only, so there is no DIY or self-fit route

Where Huawei fits the market

Huawei sits among a small group of brands that sell a complete hybrid inverter and battery system under one name, alongside rivals such as GivEnergy, Sunsynk, Fox ESS and Alpha ESS. In other words, buyers are choosing an entire ecosystem, not just a battery pack.

Its biggest advantage is scale. Huawei ships solar inverters in volumes few rivals can match, which gives installers wide parts availability and a mature service network in many regions. By contrast, smaller specialist brands sometimes struggle to match that global supply chain during busy installation seasons.

That said, Huawei’s position varies sharply by country. In some markets, such as Australia, direct sales have stopped, and existing owners now lean on local installer support instead. In most of Europe, Africa, the Middle East and large parts of Asia, however, LUNA2000 remains an active, installer-sold product line. So the sensible move is to confirm current local availability and warranty support with an installer before shortlisting Huawei.

Common questions about Huawei

What is Huawei LUNA2000?

LUNA2000 is Huawei's home battery storage line. It pairs exclusively with Huawei's own SUN2000 hybrid inverters. Together they form a complete solar-and-storage system, sold through certified installers rather than directly to homeowners.

How much storage can a LUNA2000 system hold?

A single battery group ranges from about 5 to 20.7 kWh, depending on the generation and the number of modules fitted. With the larger SUN2000-MB0 inverter, up to four groups can run in parallel. That gives a maximum of roughly 82.8 kWh behind one inverter.

What battery chemistry does LUNA2000 use?

LUNA2000 modules use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. This chemistry is widely used in home batteries because it tolerates heat well and has a strong safety record. As a result, Huawei can rate the units IP66 for outdoor use.

What warranty does Huawei offer on LUNA2000?

Huawei warranties the battery modules for 10 years. Cover also includes a lifetime energy-throughput limit, about 16,450 kWh per module on the S1 series, whichever limit is reached first. Huawei guarantees at least 60% of original capacity at the end of that term. Note that the optional Backup Box carries a shorter, 2-year warranty, so check this separately with your installer.

Can I install LUNA2000 myself?

No. Huawei sells LUNA2000 only through certified installers, as part of a full hybrid-inverter system. This is not a plug-in or DIY balcony battery, so professional design and installation are required.

Is Huawei LUNA2000 available everywhere?

Availability varies by country. Huawei has stopped direct battery sales in some markets, such as Australia, while continuing to sell through installers across much of Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Therefore, it is worth confirming local stock and warranty support with an installer before choosing LUNA2000.
