Who is BYD

BYD Company was founded in 1995 in Shenzhen, China, originally as a maker of rechargeable batteries. The company grew into one of the world’s largest battery and electric vehicle manufacturers. It is listed on both the Hong Kong and Shenzhen stock exchanges and now employs more than 220,000 people worldwide. However, this page covers only BYD’s energy storage division, not its much larger electric vehicle business.

BYD entered home and small-commercial energy storage with its first Battery-Box systems around 2015. The range has grown through several generations since then, moving from a single low-voltage pack into today’s wider high-voltage and low-voltage line-up. By 2024, BYD reported passing one million Battery-Box installations worldwide, a scale few rivals can match. In short, Battery-Box has become one of the most widely installed home battery families globally, even though BYD rarely sells to homeowners directly.

Unlike BYD’s vehicle business, which sells a complete car, Battery-Box is sold as a component. Installers choose the battery and pair it with a separate hybrid inverter of their own choosing. This sets BYD apart from brands that bundle their own inverter into every system, a point covered in more depth below.

The BYD Battery-Box product range

The Battery-Box name covers several distinct product lines, split mainly by voltage and household size. Each line uses the same cobalt-free LFP chemistry, but the modules, voltage and stacking limits differ. The four main lines sold for homes and small businesses are HVS, HVM, LVS and LVL.

Battery-Box Premium HVS

HVS is BYD’s compact high-voltage line for smaller homes. It builds from 2 to 5 modules of 2.56 kWh each, giving a usable capacity of 5.12 kWh to 12.8 kWh per tower. Installers can connect up to three HVS towers in parallel, which raises the ceiling to about 38.4 kWh. As a result, HVS can grow with a household’s needs rather than forcing an early upgrade.

Battery-Box Premium HVM

HVM is the larger sibling in the same high-voltage family. Its modules are 2.76 kWh each, and a single tower takes 3 to 8 of them for 8.28 kWh to 22.08 kWh usable. Like HVS, up to three HVM towers can run in parallel, for a maximum of about 66.2 kWh. This makes HVM a fit for bigger homes, holiday lets, or sites that also cover a home office and EV charging.

Battery-Box Premium LVS

LVS is BYD’s low-voltage residential line, built for inverters that expect a lower-voltage battery input. Each module holds 4.0 kWh, and a stack can combine 1 to 6 modules in parallel for up to 24 kWh usable. In addition, LVS runs at 100% depth of discharge, so the full rated capacity is usable. This line tends to suit markets and inverter brands where a high-voltage battery isn’t the preferred fit.

Battery-Box Premium LVL

LVL extends the same low-voltage architecture to much larger systems. Its modules are rated at roughly 15.36 kWh each, and installations can stack into the hundreds of kilowatt-hours for small commercial or multi-unit sites. For most single homes, though, HVS, HVM or LVS cover the practical range. LVL mainly matters for larger homes with heavy loads, or for small-business storage sitting beside HomeBattery.com’s usual whole-home focus.

Key technology behind BYD Battery-Box

Three things define the Battery-Box approach: chemistry, modularity, and inverter independence.

Cobalt-free LFP chemistry

All Battery-Box lines use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells rather than nickel-cobalt chemistries. LFP is more thermally stable and avoids cobalt, which eases supply-chain and sourcing concerns. BYD also makes its own cells, so it controls quality from raw material to finished module. This vertical integration is one reason BYD can back the range with a 10-year warranty.

Modular, stackable design

Every Battery-Box line is built from small modules that stack vertically or connect in parallel. Homeowners can start small and add capacity later, rather than buying for maximum future need upfront. This modularity also simplifies servicing, since an installer can swap a single faulty module instead of replacing the whole battery.

Inverter-agnostic architecture

Unlike all-in-one brands such as Huawei, Sungrow or GoodWe, which pair their batteries only with their own inverters, BYD sells Battery-Box as a standalone battery. It connects to third-party hybrid inverters from brands including Fronius, SMA, GoodWe, Sungrow, Kostal and Ingeteam for the HV range, and Victron, Deye, Solis and GoodWe for the LV range. Therefore, installers who already favour a particular inverter brand can usually keep it and add BYD storage on top. That said, exact compatibility depends on the inverter model and firmware version, so installers should always check BYD’s current compatible-inverter list before specifying a system.

Strengths and limitations

Battery-Box has clear strengths, but it isn’t the right fit for every project. Here’s how it generally balances out.

Pros

  • Pairs with a wide range of third-party hybrid inverters.
  • Backed by a 10-year product and performance warranty.
  • Uses cobalt-free LFP cells for better thermal stability.
  • Scales from a few kWh to tens of kWh per site.
  • Has a large installed base, with over one million units worldwide.

Cons

  • Only sold through installers, not directly to homeowners.
  • Inverter compatibility varies by model and firmware version.
  • BYD does not publish one global price list.
  • Specs and model names differ a little by region.
  • HV and LV lines are not interchangeable once installed.

Where BYD fits the market

BYD suits buyers who already have a preferred hybrid inverter brand in mind. Because Battery-Box is inverter-agnostic, it slots into many existing installer workflows without forcing a new inverter purchase. As a result, it is a popular choice among installers who want flexibility across several inverter brands rather than one locked ecosystem.

By contrast, buyers who want a single brand to own the whole system, battery, inverter and app together, may prefer an all-in-one option instead. In practice, BYD competes less on software polish and more on hardware scale, cell quality and installer flexibility. Markets with a mature installer base and many inverter brands in circulation, such as much of Europe, Australia and parts of Asia, tend to suit Battery-Box well. In markets where DIY or plug-in battery options dominate, however, BYD’s installer-only approach is less of a fit.

Battery-Box’s modular design means the right size depends heavily on daily usage and backup needs. Our battery capacity guide breaks down typical kWh ranges for different home sizes, and the home battery calculator can help size a system against real usage data, independent of any one brand.

Common questions about BYD

Does BYD sell Battery-Box directly to homeowners?

No, BYD sells Battery-Box through accredited installers only. This keeps the brand focused on quality installs rather than retail sales. As a result, pricing and availability vary by installer and region.

What inverters work with BYD Battery-Box?

It depends on the line. HV models such as HVS and HVM pair with brands including Fronius, SMA, GoodWe, Sungrow, Kostal and Ingeteam. LV models such as LVS typically pair with Victron, Deye, Solis and GoodWe. However, installers should always check BYD's current compatibility list, since it changes as firmware updates.

What battery chemistry does Battery-Box use?

All current Battery-Box lines use cobalt-free lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. LFP is known for thermal stability and a long working life. In addition, BYD manufactures its own cells, so it controls quality through the whole process.

How big can a BYD Battery-Box system get?

A single HVS tower holds up to 12.8 kWh, and HVM up to 22.08 kWh. Up to three towers can run in parallel, which lifts HVM to about 66.2 kWh usable. For larger sites, BYD's LVL line scales into the hundreds of kWh for small-commercial use.

What warranty does BYD offer on Battery-Box?

BYD backs Battery-Box with a 10-year product and performance warranty. The performance guarantee covers the battery retaining 60% of its usable energy over that period, subject to a throughput limit. Therefore, very heavy daily use could reach that limit before the 10 years are up, though this is unusual for typical home use.

Is BYD's home battery the same business as BYD's electric cars?

They share a parent company, but they are different divisions. BYD's energy storage arm builds and sells Battery-Box, while a separate division builds electric vehicles. That said, both benefit from BYD's wider battery cell manufacturing scale.
